FYI ... "mothering" never ends. Ride the damn "T" and take up knitting. (The Mothery's Mom)
I loved bicycling to work too but I think it's too dangerous to be on the road. Instead, most of the time I take T. Only when I know I can get to work quite late and leave late (avoiding the rush hours), I will bike.
In China, there are many cyclers so drivers are VERY aware of them. But it's different here. So although I think it's very cool, i will have to agree with your Mom :-).
